Famous Sharron co-hosts canola field selfie safely day…

The instagram shot Famous Sharron took in 2018 that caused a mini-social media storm when farmers saw it and informed her that permission was required.

In 2015 more people died taking selfies than by shark attack….selfies can be dangerous… but they can also harm the environment. Did you know you can do irreparable damage to a canola crop just by walking through it to take a picture?

Face of WA and Selfie-Queen Famous Sharron, will co-host Canola Selfie-Safely Day, an Insta-Shots afternoon in a specially planted canola field on Saturday 21 September at Petteet Park in Gilgering.

As someone who appreciates a good selfie, Famous Sharron was not aware of the potential damage that crops were experiencing until her own encounter with a local farming community last year, who passionately explained to her the impact trespassing onto farms to take photos in canola crops can have. Famous Sharron wanted to make up for her own Instagram error and help educate people how to get that gorgeous canola shot without ruining a farmer’s livelihood.

“We all want to be the one that gets the best Insta shots dolls, and even Photoshop doesn’t compare to the beauty of WA, but people don’t know they should get permission from the farmers or look out for the specially planted crops, I definitely didn’t! ” said Famous Sharron.

“I made a big mistake last year looking for that great shot to put on Instagram, and thank goodness for Telstra dolls, or I wouldn’t have seen the farmers messages when I was travelling, and just upset the whole of WA,” she said.

Kevin and Pam Johnson from Petteet Park, who have seen the damage a stream of tourists wanting photos amongst the brilliant yellow flowers and the cross-contamination between crops that farm-hopping can cause, have taken the proactive step of planting a canola crop especially for tourists to take photos in.

“We just want to remind everyone to be respectful of local properties and not to trespass into crops just to take a picture. Instead, come and enjoy our specially planted canola paddock over the next few weeks,” Kevin Johnson said.

Lovers of good selfies and photography enthusiasts are invited to join Famous Sharron on Canola Selfie-Safely Day at Petteet Park to guarantee themselves a stunning pic that can be taken in a safe and respectful way. Petteet Park is also open multiple weekends across spring – just BYO camera and get snapping.
