Food and Farm Fest at Quarry Farm

Nancy Scade of Australian Native Nursery is just one of the impressive line up of speakers at this years Food and Farm Fest on Saturday 5 May.

Nancy will be speaking on the importance of growing native plants to feed our native birds and insects not only because they are important pollinators, but also for their ability to naturally control undesirable pests.

Nancy whose passion for Australian native plants started more than 20 years ago runs a large Australian native plant nursery that grows more than 2500 different species of trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses.

Her extensive knowledge on the topic makes her the perfect teacher on how to establish native plants so that they require little or no watering.

She will explain the value of choosing the appropriate plants to suit the soil type and how to plant correctly.

Nancy’s talk will also include how to prepare the site and how to ‘long-stem plant for success’.

The SJ Food & Farm Fest is an interactive festival where people from urban areas can meet people who own peri-urban rural properties and who produce food, products and services that benefit our community.

For one low entry fee the community has the opportunity to participate in a variety of simple fun activities, demonstrations and a number of very talented speakers all designed to raise awareness of the importance of nutrition through good quality and local food.

Nancy will be joined by other guest speakers including Dr Peter Dingle, Charles Otway (Permaculture), Linda Bonney and Peter Fearns (Fermented Foods), Rebecca Watson (Naturopath), Dr Merri Harris (Healing with Food) and our local bull whisperer, Gerald Bergsma (Taking the junk out of beef).

Demonstrations will include Wicking beds; tree climbing; horse ranch sorting; horse carriage driving; watching drones at work; you can learn how to de-husk macadamia nuts and more.

There are great activities for the kids including farm games, making fruit kebabs, face painting, craft activities, camel rides, pony rides and a pumpkin rolling competition.  There will be also be a great variety of stalls to wander about.
