Celebrating volunteers at Bethanie…

Bethanie celebrated their volunteers

Bethanie, one of Western Australia’s most recognised not-for-profit aged care and retirement living providers celebrated with their volunteers for their altruistic efforts in a series of social activities and morning and afternoon teas.

The activities were held as a part of National Volunteer Week, an annual event to focus national attention on the impact and power of volunteerism, service and leadership, ran from 20 – 26 May.

Bethanie CEO Chris How points out that volunteering needs to present a win-win for both parties involved. “With over 4,000 Western Australians in our care, we simply couldn’t operate without our 550-odd volunteers who we treat as part of our team.

“Retention of those volunteers is about ensuring they know how much they are appreciated, matching their talents and life experiences to roles, and being flexible around their availability. Quite often they need us as much as we need them, so it really is a greater good for all involved.

“Bethanie is very grateful to receive, on average, 30-50 volunteer enquiries each month, last month we received over 80 calls! Our volunteer numbers continue to increase, and we couldn’t be more thankful.

The various events during National Volunteer week provided an opportunity for Bethanie to formally thank and honor their volunteer’s service to the community.

Chris adds, “Whether it’s through social interaction with a resident, transporting customers, running a group (Bingo, cards, scrabble), participating in games, playing music or helping with the dishes, every little bit makes such a big difference to help brighten the day of our customers.

“Volunteers can quickly lose motivation if they feel that their work is not valued, so these events are just one way of showing our sincere appreciation for the work they do.”

The Volunteer Week activities took place at various Bethanie sites across Western Australia.

Bethanie volunteers can undertake an array of jobs across Aged Care Homes, Living Well Centres and Retirement Villages, as well as supporting Bethanie clients in their own homes.
