Sea lion numbers stable

At the beautiful Houtman Abrolhos Islands, the most northern population of Australian sea lions is holding up, according to the latest monitoring.

Parks and Wildlife Service staff have been checking numbers at the remote island paradise, 60km off the coast of Geraldton.

Australian sea lions are endangered and there are concerns the population is decreasing, however the latest estimate puts numbers at around 200.

Houtman Abrolhos Islands National Park transforms into a sea lion pup playground every 18 months when Australia sea lions breed here. The playful pups hang out in shallow pools and sprawl upon beaches, seemingly without a care in the world.
