Yummy Yanchep! This delightful description was blurted out by one of the little grandkids in our weekend getaway brunch gang.
Our plates of pancakes, eggs, sausages, hash-browns and abundant drinks may have had something to do with it.
Yanchep, while a mere 56kms north of Perth city, has been elusive to us for far too many sunrises and sunsets.
Yanchep’s café, then a welcome refresher outpost, is now a full-scale – yummy – Orion Café.
Yanchep’s setting in a national park comes with a taste of ocean, an offering of lagoon and under – for our visit – clear blue sky. On the horizon, a large, tall-masted ship, perhaps the training ship, Leeuwin, up from Fremantle.
Orion has plenty of tables on offer for our party of four adults and two ankle-biters.
Brunch buddy, Professor Ken, declared the coffee to be good and strong.
We chose grilled halloumi, a generous serving of avocado, roasted pumpkin, poached egg, quinoa and kale on a tasty butter milk dressing ($23.50).
We paired it with rather predictable, but safe, scrambled eggs on toast ($13, bacon an additional $6).
Orion filled rapidly with walkers and morning swimmers. Lots of tee-shirts, bathers and thongs, displaying ample body art.
Orion, established in 2014, has its own kids’ playground where dogs are also welcome.
Orion welcomes the growing numbers resulting from the newly-extended train line from Perth (50 minutes away) plus a short bus ride from the station.
Top points go to Orion for their broad-based selections of fresh and flavoursome foods where prices are fair and can be controlled by share-plates.
Here’s a nibble at the offerings.
Home-made granola with toasted coconut, almond, cashews, sesame seeds and dried fruits, served with mixed berries ($16).
Eggs on toast, two eggs served poached, fried or scrambled ($13).
Orion big breakfast is a monster with free-range eggs on ciabatta toast with bacon, pork sausage, mushroom, home-made hash browns and sea-salt tomato ($27).
Mushroom bruschetta, sauteed mushroom with basil pesto, baby spinach, half avocado, poached egg, fetta and parmesan cheese on toasted sourdough ($26).
Rice congee, sauteed garlic, ginger, onion, red chilli, roasted corn, green onion and poached egg served on toasted sourdough ($23).
Breakfast quesadillas ($20) with bacon, hash-brown and spinach.
