More than two million Western Australians will be eligible for a free influenza vaccination from May 1 as the State Government expands its annual immunisation program under the “Be Wise, Immunise” campaign.
The initiative forms a key part of the Western Australian Government’s Winter Strategy 2026, which aims to reduce the impact of seasonal illnesses by improving access to preventative healthcare.
From tomorrow, more than 540 community pharmacies across the state will begin offering no-cost influenza and RSV vaccinations, supporting the government’s efforts to keep communities healthy through the colder months.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that community pharmacies have partnered with the State Government to deliver free influenza vaccinations. In 2026, the program has been expanded to include a wider range of vaccines, ensuring more Western Australians can access protection suited to their needs.
The expanded program includes: FluMist®, an intranasal influenza vaccine for children aged 2–11 years. Injectable influenza vaccines for children from 2 years of age (previously available from 5 years). RSV vaccine Arexvy® for people aged 65–74 years living in residential aged care homes.
Community pharmacies play a vital role in making vaccinations accessible and convenient, with more than 90 per cent open on weekends and many offering extended hours. This accessibility ensures that people across metropolitan and regional areas can easily receive their vaccinations without long waits or travel.
Health authorities emphasise that vaccination not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of influenza and RSV within the community, safeguarding those most at risk of serious illness. By reducing severe cases and hospitalisations, the program also helps ease pressure on hospital emergency departments and ensures capacity is available for patients with urgent medical needs.
The program’s launch coincides with World Immunisation Week, highlighting the importance of vaccination in protecting public health. Pharmacists are encouraging Western Australians to take the opportunity to review their vaccination status and discuss available options, including vaccines for measles, shingles, and Hepatitis B.
Many community pharmacies offer walk-in appointments, while those preferring to book ahead can secure a time online at www.findapharmacy.com.au.
