Rottnest Island has introduced a brand-new way for visitors to move, play and connect, with the launch of Rotto Rackets Sports, the island’s first dedicated pickleball facility.
Featuring four purpose-built outdoor courts, the new facility is set among sweeping ocean views and the iconic Bathurst Lighthouse, offering a unique combination of sport, scenery and social connection in one of Western Australia’s most loved destinations.
Pickleball, a fast-growing paddle sport that blends elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, is known globally for being easy to learn, inclusive and highly social. The launch of dedicated courts on Rottnest Island marks a significant milestone for both the island’s recreation offering and the sport’s continued growth in Western Australia.
Unlike many traditional racquet sports, pickleball requires minimal experience to get started. Games are short, equipment is lightweight, and the smaller court size makes it accessible to a wide range of ages and fitness levels — a key factor in bringing the sport to the island.
“We wanted to introduce an activity that felt completely aligned with the Rottnest experience,” said the founders of Rotto Rackets Sports.
“Pickleball is social, welcoming and relaxed — it brings people together quickly. When you combine that with fresh air, ocean views and the lighthouse as a backdrop, it becomes something really special.”
All courts are bookable online, allowing visitors to secure a time slot either before travelling to the island or while already there. Equipment is available on-site, meaning players do not need to bring their own gear, with balls conveniently available via an on-site vending machine.

The courts have been designed for casual, recreational play rather than competition, encouraging visitors to treat pickleball as part of a broader island day — between swims, bike rides, lunches and sunset walks.
The launch reflects a broader shift in tourism towards experience-led travel, where visitors are increasingly seeking moments of connection, light activity and memorable settings rather than structured or high-intensity sport.
“Rottnest has always been about slowing down and enjoying the outdoors,” the founders added. “Pickleball doesn’t take over your day — it adds to it.”
