After captivating more than six million people around the world, MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical is set to open in Perth next month, marking the final stop on its acclaimed Australian tour.

Set in 1992, the musical takes audiences behind the scenes of Michael Jackson’s legendary Dangerous World Tour, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process that defined one of the most influential artists of all time. Told through the eyes of an MTV journalist granted exclusive rehearsal-room access, the production explores the artistry, ambition and complexity behind Jackson’s music and performances.

Leading the cast is powerhouse performer Ilario Grant, who has earned rave reviews for his portrayal of MJ on Broadway and in the Australian premieres in Melbourne and Brisbane. He will be joined by Australian performer Liam Damons as the teenage Michael. The Perth season also features Kyle Lamar Mitchell as Berry Gordy and Nick, Sarah Morrison as MTV journalist Rachel, Albany-born Tim Wright as Michael’s business manager Dave, and Subiaco resident G Madison IV as Randy Jackson.

The ensemble includes original Broadway cast member Oyoyo Joi as Katherine Jackson, Conlon Bonner as Tito Jackson and Quincy Jones, J. Daughtry as Joseph Jackson and tour director Rob, and Yashith Fernando as Alejandro, alongside a talented international and Australian cast.

Since its Broadway debut in 2022, MJ has become a global phenomenon, with productions in London, Germany and across the United States. The Australian production, brought to life by producer Michael Cassel in partnership with original Broadway producers Lia Vollack, John Branca and John McClain, premiered in Sydney in March 2025 to standing ovations and critical acclaim.

“Perth audiences are in for a truly special experience when MJ arrives at Crown Theatre,” said producer Michael Cassel. “This show has captivated crowds around the world, and now it’s Western Australia’s turn to witness this global hit that connects audiences across generations through the music we all know and love.”

The musical has received widespread recognition, earning ten Tony Award nominations and winning four, including Best Choreography for creator Christopher Wheeldon OBE and Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost. It has also collected multiple Olivier Awards and Australian industry honours, including four 2025 BroadwayWorld Sydney Awards and two Green Room Awards.

Featuring more than 25 of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits — including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror and Thriller — MJ celebrates the music, movement and magic of the King of Pop.

The production’s creative team includes some of Broadway’s most celebrated talents, with scenic design by Derek McLane, lighting by Natasha Katz, costumes by Paul Tazewell, sound by Gareth Owen, and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon.

Pre-sale tickets are available from Monday May 4, with all Perth performances on sale from Thursday May 7 at 6am AWST through Ticketmaster and mjthemusical.com.au.
