Free public health talk – food is medicine

The RPH Research Foundation is excited to announce that Food is Medicine will be the subject of their next FREE Public Health talk.

Join some of Perth’s leading researchers as they discuss:

· How what we eat can help prevent chronic disease.

· How our diet influences our gut health.

· Dietary guidelines.

· The chemistry of bioactive components in food. It’s time to rethink our ideas about ‘antioxidants’.

The Speakers

Prof Kevin Croft, School of Biomedical Science, The University of Western Australia. Kevin is a biochemist and will discuss the chemistry of some food components and how they work in the body. We used to think some of these components were ‘antioxidants’ but we are beginning to understand their role is more complex.

Prof Jonathan Hodgson, Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Edith Cowan University. Jonathan is a nutritionist who has studied the effects of food components on cardiovascular health. He will talk about current dietary guidelines, risk factors for disease and how food can help prevent chronic diseases.

Dr Cathy Bondonno, Research Fellow, Human Nutrition at Edith Cowan University and Chair of the Nutrition Society of Australia (Perth Group). Cathy will give examples of studies carried out at the RPH Research Foundation, including how eating apples and green leafy vegetables can help improve blood pressure and vascular health. She will also discuss the link between the food we eat and our gut microbiome.
