The Avon Descent will take over the Avon and upper Swan rivers this August 9-10, promising another unforgettable weekend of thrills, spills, and intense competition.
Registrations are open—don’t miss your chance to take on Western Australia’s ultimate river challenge.
As excitement builds for this legendary sporting, community, and spectator event, Northam’s Avon Descent Association Chair, Greg Kaeding, is eager to see opportunities for the general public to get involved grow, so more people can participate in the iconic event.

“The Avon Descent is renowned for being the ultimate river challenge in WA,” Mr Kaeding said.
“Training and preparation for the 124km race is profound, and we appreciate that isn’t for everyone, so there are now a range of short courses for people with little to no experience.
“The short courses mean anyone can get on the water and be part of the Avon Descent action.”
“The three short, flat-water courses on Sunday August 10, suit paddle craft including kayaks, stand up paddle boards (SUPs), outriggers, surf skis, and dragon boats… to name a few.”
The 52nd Avon Descent kicks off in Northam on Saturday August 9, before competitors tackle the two-day, 124-kilometre course to finish in Bayswater on Sunday August 10. Short course options start and finish at Bayswater too, making Sunday a huge day to celebrate water sport in WA.
“The Avon Descent is truly one-of-a-kind,” says Mr Kaeding. “Some parts of the course deliver real showstopper moments, and spectators are always treated to remarkable displays of athleticism and determination.”
“The festivals and entertainment held alongside the event, including the Northam Bilya Festival, City of Swan Festival at Lilac Hill, City of Belmont activities at Garvey Park, and the City of Bayswater Finish Line Festival at Riverside Gardens, add to the brilliant and inclusive atmosphere of the Avon Descent.”
Last year’s race delivered heart-pounding action, despite an unseasonably dry lead-up.
“In more than 50 years of racing, we’ve seen nearly every water level imaginable,” Mr Kaeding explains. “Each year, competitors must adapt to the unpredictable conditions, and that’s what pushes them to their absolute limits. The unknown is what makes victory so much sweeter—just ask any die-hard racer!”
