WHEN FALL IS COMING which releases in select cinemas nationally on July 31 – in Perth it’s screening at Luna Leederville. It’s a little gem of a film from acclaimed French filmmaker François Ozon, which is currently sitting at 96% on Rotten tomatoes. Central to its plot, is a family mushroom poisoning, so it couldn’t be more topical!
Revered French filmmaker François Ozon showcases a mushroom-related crime at a family lunch, in this evocative portrayal of life in a French village which hides many secrets beneath its tranquil exterior.
In the quiet stillness of autumnal Burgundy, Michelle (Hélène Vincent), leads an isolated life, foraging for mushrooms in the forest with her friend Marie-Claude (Josiane Balasko). When her sharp-tongued daughter Valérie (Ludivine Sagnier) arrives unannounced to leave her son in Michelle’s care over the school holidays, Michelle sees a chance to repair their fractured bond. But a single mistake sets off a ripple of consequences, threatening her relationships and plunging her back into estrangement and guilt.
As the landscape darkens with the season, a new turn of events – triggered by the unexpected release of Marie-Claude’s son (Pierre Lottin) from prison – shifts the fragile emotional terrain once more.
Set against the golden decay of autumn, WHEN FALL IS COMING is a moody, atmospheric reflection on regret, redemption and the secrets that fester just beneath the surface – like the most dangerous mushrooms, hiding in plain sight.
