Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA proudly presents Raised in Big Spirit Country, a powerful concert event celebrating the legendary artists of Broome and the next generation shaping its musical future. Led by acclaimed singer-songwriter and Black Swan Associate

Artist Naomi Pigram-Mitchell, this multi-generational production brings together some of the Kimberley’s finest musicians and performers for an unforgettable evening of culture, connection, and song. Naomi, a proud descendant of Broome’s rich musical legacy, was raised among the ‘artistic giants’ who defined the iconic ‘Broome sound.’ Her father, Stephen Pigram, is part of the legendary Pigram Brothers, and her musical influences are deeply rooted in the pioneering work of artists like Jimmy Chi, Kuckles, and Scrap Metal. Now, she stands at a crossroads between history and the future, bringing the spirit of Broome’s music to new audiences in Raised in Big Spirit Country.
“I grew up surrounded by incredible musicians – people who shaped the sound of the Kimberley and had a massive influence on my generation,” says Naomi. “This show is about honouring them while also amplifying the voices of those coming up now. The Broome sound is unique – it’s a multicultural mix influenced by the people who settled there during the pearling boom, and you can hear those rich cultural threads in the music.”
Featuring a dynamic ensemble of Broome’s hottest musicians and performers, Raised in Big Spirit Country showcases original compositions written by Naomi and her brother Bart Pigram, alongside beloved classics that define the region’s musical heritage. Audiences can expect to hear songs from Kuckles, Scrap Metal, and other iconic Kimberley bands whose music has remained largely unheard outside of the region.
Premiering in August 2024 as part of A Taste of Broome, the one-night-only pilot performance received overwhelming praise, particularly from Broome’s First Nations community. Now, the production is heading to Perth with an expanded vision, promising a bigger, bolder, and deeply moving experience.
Naomi’s return to Black Swan marks a full-circle moment in her career. Having begun her professional journey as a teenager in Black Swan’s national tour of Corrugation Road, she now takes on a new role as Black Swan’s Indigenous Engagement and Program Manager, dedicated to fostering opportunities for regional artists and strengthening the connection between the Kimberley and Perth.
“I’m excited to rebuild the connection between Black Swan and my community up north. There’s a long history there – Andrew Ross and Black Swan did so much to bring Kimberley stories to the stage, and I want to continue that legacy by creating pathways for emerging Indigenous artists,” says Naomi.
With Raised in Big Spirit Country, Naomi and her team are not just revisiting history- they’re ensuring its legacy lives on. This one-of-a-kind event is a celebration of resilience, pride, and the enduring power of music to bring communities together.
