Perth Tango Festival Brings International Flair to the City

The rhythm and passion of Argentine tango will take centre stage in Perth this April as the Perth Tango Club presents the Perth Tango Festival 2026, running from April 15 to 22. The festival marks more than two decades of the Club’s contribution to Perth’s cultural life, celebrating not only the dance itself but also the music, artistry, and community spirit that surround it.

For more than 20 years, the Perth Tango Club has been a cornerstone of the city’s arts scene, hosting regular dance events, live music performances, and cultural gatherings that bring people together through the shared love of tango.

While tango is often associated with social dancing, the club’s work extends far beyond the dance floor, highlighting the genre’s musical depth and its power to connect people across cultures.

The 2026 Festival is set to be one of the club’s most ambitious yet, drawing participants and visitors from across Australia and overseas. It will feature workshops, performances, and social events that showcase the many facets of tango—from traditional milongas to contemporary interpretations.

The festival also plays an important role in supporting Perth’s cultural and visitor economy, attracting both local audiences and international guests.

A major highlight of this year’s program is the appearance of Hyperion Ensemble, an internationally renowned tango orchestra featuring musicians from Italy and Argentina. Known for their dynamic performances and authentic sound, the Ensemble brings the full energy of Buenos Aires to the stage.

Live tango orchestras of this scale are rarely heard in Australia, making their performances a central attraction of the festival.

While the Festival’s evening gala events cater to experienced dancers, organisers are also committed to making tango accessible to everyone.

On Sunday April 19, the Perth Town Hall will host An Afternoon of Tango, a special daytime concert designed for the general public. Running from 3pm to 4:30pm, the concert will feature the Hyperion Ensemble in a seated performance format, allowing audiences to experience tango as music and performance rather than purely as dance. Supported by Lotterywest, the event aims to open the world of tango to a broad community audience.

Earlier that same day, from 1pm to 2pm, the Town Hall will also host a free beginner tango lesson led by Juan Rando from the Juan Rando Dance Academy.

This introductory session is open to all and requires no prior dance experience, offering a relaxed and welcoming way for newcomers to step into the world of tango.

The concert program has been carefully curated to appeal to a wide audience, blending live music with short dance elements that capture the spirit and emotion of tango. Together, the beginner class and afternoon concert create an inviting entry point into the festival, encouraging the wider Perth community to experience the beauty, rhythm, and connection that tango inspires.
