A short film competition is inviting Western Australians to explore what it means to age and to challenge ageist attitudes through creative storytelling.

The Life in Pictures short film competition encourages filmmakers of all ages and experience levels to produce films that promote positive, age-friendly messages and celebrate the contributions of older people in the community.

Minister for Aged Care and Seniors, Simone McGurk, said the initiative plays an important role in promoting inclusion and respect for older Western Australians.

“The Life in Pictures short film competition is a fantastic initiative that challenges ageism and promotes age-friendly messages in our community,” Minister McGurk said. “It’s also a great way for budding filmmakers to get involved in one of Perth’s favourite film festivals and help start important conversations in our community.”

The competition is part of a broader campaign to combat ageism and ensure all Western Australians live free from discrimination.

A series of free workshops will be held to help participants develop their ideas and filmmaking skills:

  • Wednesday March 11, 10am–12pm – Vic Park Community Space, Unit 10/660 Albany Hwy, Victoria Park
  • Wednesday March 18, 10am–12pm – Fremantle Library, Mardoo Room, 151 High St, Fremantle
  • Saturday April 4, 10am–12pm – City of Vincent Library, 9 Loftus St, Leederville
