They say “Mother knows best,” but everyone knows — Nonna knows better. Fringe World favourite Etta D’Elia is set to return to Fringe World Perth in 2026 with her brand-new cabaret show, NonnaMia!, a heartfelt and humorous tribute to the beloved Italian matriarch. The show promises to blend music, comedy, and storytelling in a celebration of family, culture, and the enduring spirit of Nonna.
Following the success of her previous Fringe hits From Naples…With Love! in 2025 and Buona Sera Signorina in 2023 and 2024, D’Elia’s latest production continues her exploration of Italian heritage through song and story. This time, she turns her attention to the women who shaped generations — the grandmothers who cooked, cared, and commanded respect with equal parts love and stubbornness.
“NonnaMia! is my tribute to all the Nonnas who have been the heart and soul of Italian families,” says D’Elia. “They are the matriarchs, the storytellers, and the ones who kept our traditions alive. My own Nonna, Etta, meant the world to me — I even took my stage name from her. This show is my way of honouring her and all the Nonnas who have inspired us.”
Backed by her jazz quintet, D’Elia will perform a selection of songs that every Nonna loves to sing, reimagined with her signature swing and flair. The show will feature Italian classics such as Bella Ciao, Marina, and the unofficial Italian-Australian anthem C’é La Luna. Between songs, D’Elia will weave in stories that explore the cultural quirks and intergenerational experiences of Italo-Australians — from the early days of migration to the modern realities of life in Australia.
“I hope this show brings generations together, just like Nonna would around her table,” D’Elia says. “I can’t wait to see grandchildren with their Nonnas in the audience, singing along and sharing in the joy of Italian culture.”
NonnaMia! will tour across three Western Australian locations during Fringe World, including Shelter Brewing Company in Busselton, Encore in Rockingham, and the State Theatre Centre of WA in Perth. The final two performances at the State Theatre Centre will feature a special guest appearance by comedian James Liotta, best known for his television roles in Fat Pizza, Thank God You’re Here, and Upper Middle Bogan. Liotta will appear as his viral social media character, Nonna Maria Pappagallo — a hilariously exaggerated yet deeply familiar portrayal of the Italian-Australian grandmother.
“I met James two years ago when we were both performing at the Perth Italian Festival, and I was really impressed with his work,” says D’Elia. “His character captures the essence of an Italian-Australian Nonna perfectly. It’s going to be a joy to share the stage with him — and like all Nonnas, we’ve got some secret ingredients up our sleeves for the final two nights!”
