West Australian Ballet’s acclaimed production of Dracula is set to rise again, thrilling audiences in Perth and, for the first time in more than a decade, touring interstate to Adelaide.

Since its premiere, more than 37,000 people across Western Australia have experienced the gothic masterpiece, which has also earned international recognition through performances by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet and the Polish National Ballet.

Created for West Australian Ballet in 2018 by renowned Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor, Dracula is based on Bram Stoker’s classic novel and features a sweeping score by composer Wojciech Kilar.

The production’s striking sets and costumes were designed by Phil R. Daniels and Charles Cusick Smith.

“As we move toward our 75th anniversary next year, this production stands as one of the most celebrated achievements in our recent history,” said West Australian Ballet artistic director Leanne Stojmenov. “It has played a vital role in shaping our artistic journey and success.”

This year’s revival introduces a new generation of dancers stepping into the ballet’s most iconic roles — Old Dracula, Young Dracula, Mina, and Jonathan Harker.

For several artists, it will be their first time leading the production, bringing fresh energy and interpretation to the haunting tale.

Pastor returns to Perth for the first time since his award-winning Swan Lake with West Australian Ballet in 2022. He will work with the company in its Maylands studios before travelling to Adelaide for the national tour.

Dracula returns not as it was, but revitalised and ready to inspire audiences once again,” said Stojmenov.

Dracula will be performed at the Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, from April 17 to 22 and at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth from May 15 to 30 accompanied by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
