STANDING in the newly refurbished His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth’s CBD, artistic director Aurélien Scannella reflects on the history not only of the magnificent venue, but also one of the world’s oldest surviving classical ballets.

“Our audience will be treated to new seats and a renewed auditorium in this historic building, while also seeing for the first time our current dancers performing these historic roles”, said Scannella.

West Australian Ballet previously performed La Sylphide in 2013, but after five years, and with multiple new dancers, Scannella is excited to see this generation of dancers make La Sylphide their own.

“While both ‘The Maj’ and La Sylphide are more than 100 years old, they will both have a new lease on life this May”, says Scannella.

La Sylphide tells the story of Scottish farmer James on the eve of his wedding, and the temptation that is presented to him by a beautiful, yet untouchable, winged Sylph.

First performed under the direction of August Bournonville in Copenhagen in 1836, West Australian Ballet remain true to the original style with the consultancy of staging director Dinna Bjørn.

Bjørn is well-known world-wide as the international authority on the Bournonville style, having worked with the Royal Danish Ballet as a Bournonville consultant and Finnish National Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet as artistic director.

The grand sets and beautiful costumes from Richard Roberts and Lexi De Silva respectively, will also leave the audience in awe, and once again West Australian Symphony Orchestra, under the instruction of Jon Tooby, will bring to life this lively score.

Continuing its mission to enrich people’s lives through dance, West Australian Ballet will present this production to the general public alongside special dedicated performances for people with limited access to the arts.
