Perth’s rich history and culture will take centre stage this April as the City of Perth presents the Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Festival, a month-long celebration of stories, secrets and community spirit.
Running throughout April, the festival features more than 100 events and activities that highlight the city’s unique mix of historical and cultural experiences. From secret gardens and family recipes to ghost tours and storytelling, the program offers something for everyone — families, history lovers and curious explorers alike.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the festival would bring the city and its neighbourhoods to life.
“The City and our neighbourhoods will come alive this April with more than 100 events and activities dedicated to sharing our unique stories. There is something for everyone to see, do and learn,” Mr Reynolds said.
This year’s program also marks several major milestones, including 180 years of Mercedes College and 190 years of the Old Court House Law Museum, adding extra depth to the celebrations.
Music lovers can explore Perth’s vibrant cultural history through a series of talks at the City of Perth Library, celebrating the social history of music that shaped the city — from pub rock to punk. Local music legends will share stories from the 1950s through to the 1990s, reflecting on the artists and venues that defined Perth’s sound.
The festival will also shine a spotlight on the city’s beloved parks and gardens through Moments in the Park, a series of events across Harold Boas Gardens, Stirling Gardens, Russell Square, Moort-ak Waadiny (Wellington Square), Queens Gardens and Victoria Gardens. Visitors can enjoy theatre performances by Theatre 180, live music, workshops and storytelling sessions, all set among Perth’s most beautiful green spaces.
“Visitors can learn about the history of these special places while enjoying theatre performances, live music and storytelling. Bring a picnic rug and relax under the shade of these beautiful parks, with coffee and ice cream available on site,” Mr Reynolds said.
With most events free to attend, the festival offers a perfect opportunity for families to enjoy a city ‘staycation’ during the school holidays.
Highlights include Memento, a collaboration between TAFE students and the Royal Western Australian Historical Society reimagining WA history through fashion, an Open House at the ABC studios, and the Pioneering Spaces exhibition at Gallery Central.
Supported by Lotterywest and ABC Radio Perth, the festival invites everyone to explore, learn and celebrate the stories that make Boorloo (Perth) unique.
