This April, discover the rich heritage of Boorloo (Perth) as the City of Perth presents the Lotterywest Boorloo Heritage Festival.
Delve into hidden histories, explore famed sites and natural wonders, or immerse yourself in cultural storytelling, live art installations, ghost tours and much more – it’s the festival for families and fun-seekers of all ages.
The festival runs for the entire month with many free opportunities and ways to celebrate Perth’s unique mix of historical and cultural stories, sites and scenes.
City of Perth Deputy Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the jam-packed program offered something for people of all ages.
“The City and our neighbourhoods will come alive this April with more than 100 events and activities dedicated to sharing our unique stories. There is something for everyone to see, do and learn,” Reynolds said.
“This year, we proudly celebrate significant milestones, including 125 years of North Metro TAFE – a true education cornerstone that has enriched generations of Western Australians.
“TAFE Fashion students will reimagine styles from the city’s iconic nightclubs, while a special exhibition in the Council House Foyer Gallery will trace the evolution of art and design education through the work of past teachers and graduates.
“Visitors can explore a poster exhibition highlighting Northbridge’s Chinese cultural heritage, admire jewellery inspired by Perth’s historic architecture and experience interactive 3D models of Art Deco landmarks”.
The festival also explores the city’s connection with the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) and celebrates a local icon, in the Maarli (Black Swan).
“School holidays will see ‘Mamma Maali’ nest at Elizabeth Quay from April 14 to 30, celebrating the Maali through art, culture, and interactive fun. This is a special one for families to head in and watch acclaimed artist Justin Martin bring Mamma Maali to life through a live art installation or take a ride on the ‘Swans on the Swan’ pedal boat train in Elizabeth Quay.
“You can also immerse yourself in swan-themed crafts and nature play and help fold 1,000 of more origami swans in a special ‘make a wish’ installation with all donations going to Telethon to help support kids in need,” Cr Reynolds said.
Nearly all events are free which is great news for families looking to enjoy a Perth ‘staycation’ during the school holidays. But be sure to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
“The diverse program personifies our diverse city. My top picks include performances of the classic Western Australian story ‘A Fortunate Life’ at the Perth Town Hall. Audiences are also invited to step into the shadows of The Perth Mint with THEATRE180’s award-winning performers as they bring to life the many myths and legends of this historic site” Cr Reynolds said.
Major Supporter Lotterywest and Media Partner 720 ABC Radio Perth said the Festival is the ideal opportunity to visit the City and find out more about its heritage.
